What’s Happening?
Comments made by a NASCAR Cup Series team executive on a recent podcast episode have fans NASCAR asking what the future may hold for the Truck Series.
While the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts and Cup Series have seen a fair amount of changes to the generation of cars driven in their series, NASCAR’s youngest National Series, the Craftsman Truck Series, has, for the most part, maintained a similar on-track identity to its origins in the 1990s.
Still, that doesn’t mean rumors don’t make the rounds from time to time about a change on the horizon, and this week, a remark from Rick Ware Racing Competition Director Tommy Baldwin Jr on the latest episode of Door Bumper Clear has caught the attention of NASCAR’s online community.
During this episode, amid a conversation about the NASCAR Truck Series inspection process, Baldwin said:
“They’re [NASCAR] doing it because they’re trying to implement this new truck in a couple years. They’re trying to make it aggravating for you, to go ‘Oh, you won’t have any problems.'” — Tommy Baldwin Jr
While this quote took some fans by surprise, it’s not the first talk of big changes on the horizon for the series, especially from Door Bumper Clear.
The Rumored “Spec” Truck
Last year, Baldwin’s co-host, NASCAR National Series Spotter Freddie Kraft, got similar attention thanks to further talk of changes to the Truck Series.
These discussions started, ironically, with the August 24, 2025 episode of Denny Hamlin’s Actions Detrimental podcast, where Hamlin said he heard rumors that NASCAR told teams they “need them to go to spec trucks by 2028.”
That same week, during the August 25, 2025, episode of Door Bumper Clear, Kraft backed up Hamlin’s claim, saying:
“There’s big changes coming to the truck series. . . I think it’s either ’27 or ’28 season, they’re [NASCAR] basically going to go to something that we see on Sundays of a kit car, whatever you want to call it.” — Freddie Kraft
What Kraft is alluding to is a truck that is similar to the NASCAR Cup Series Next Gen Car, which comes with parts from single-source suppliers and features changes that some consider to be “non-traditional”.
Of course, as of press time, NASCAR has yet to announce any planned changes to the Truck Series, though that clearly does not mean talks of a future overhaul of the series have stalled by any means.
Rumor Mill: Truck Series Shifting to Spec Series “By 2028”
What’s Happening? Perhaps the most talked-about rumor in the NASCAR world right now is that the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series will…
