In a recent interview, Road America Track President and General Manager Mike Kertscher discussed the potential for a NASCAR National Series return to the track. While they are open to a return, Kertscher claims the iconic venue is “not waiting around” for the top divisions of stock car racing.
Since losing both their NASCAR National Series dates, motorsports fans in Wisconsin and across the country have wondered when and if NASCAR will return to Road America.
In a new interview with Dave Kallmann of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Mike Kertscher claims, “There’s nothing to report.” The Track President of Road America went on to say, “There’s nothing to hide either. If it works for them, it works for them. And we’re here. We’re also not waiting around. We’re moving forward.”
Though this doesn’t clear up anything about the track’s future, it looks as if NASCAR fans in the Badger State are still in for a long wait for NASCAR’s return. However, this does not mean the track isn’t open to NASCAR; as Kertscher said, “We’d love to see NASCAR come back. It looks good here. It’s a nice product.”
The track, located in Elkhart Lake, may have the longest gap between NASCAR Cup Series race dates, with its first race happening in 1953 and the second in 2021. The midwestern road course has hosted three NASCAR Cup Series dates, most recently serving as a schedule stopgap prior to the addition of the NASCAR Street Circuit in Chicago.
However, after the Cup Series and the Xfinity Series left the track in 2022 and 2023, it was entirely removed from the NASCAR National Series schedule for the first time since 2010. While the Truck Series raced at the historic Milwaukee Mile in 2023 and 2024, the track, which served as NASCAR’s last foothold in Wisconsin, did not return for the 2025 season.
Though NASCAR floated Road America’s Cup Series date to another midwestern track, rumors that 2025 could be the final season at the Chicago Street Circuit present a real scenario in which the Great Lakes region is underrepresented on the 2026 NASCAR schedule.
