What’s Happening?
On Tuesday afternoon, Dustin Albino of Jayski broke the news that Michael McDowell’s Crew chief, Travis Peterson, would follow the veteran driver to Spire Motorsports in 2025. Albino notes that the deal is multi-year, similar to McDowell’s contract.
- Michael McDowell and Travis Peterson have been together at Front Row Motorsports since last season. Since then, they have managed one win, four top-fives and 12 top-tens. Last season, they also finished 15th place in points, a career-high for McDowell.
- On May 8, McDowell and Spire publicly entered a long-term agreement to drive the 71 car in 2025. McDowell, winner of the 2021 Daytona 500, has raced for FRM full-time since 2018 and will depart the team as its winningest driver, having won two career races. FRM has seen improvement since bringing McDowell on board, including Tier-One support from Ford, a staple of any front-running team.
- Spire Motorsports looks to follow the pattern by bringing on the now 39-year-old driver. This is one of multiple silly season moves the team has made, including the signing of Crew Chief Rodney Childers, recently cutting ties with long-time driver Corey Lajoie and now the signing of Peterson.
