O’Reilly: Polesitter Carson Kvapil Goes for a Scary Ride on Lap 2 in Kansas

What’s Happening?

It didn’t take long for things to get wild in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series Kansas Lottery 300 at Kansas Speedway. As the No. 07 had a solo spin on Lap 2, bringing out our first caution of the race, there was even bigger trouble up front. The JRM trio of Carson Kvapil, William Byron, and Justin Allgaier were all battling for the race lead coming out of Turn 4. With Kvapil in the middle, Allgaier to his outside, and Byron underneath, the No. 1 of Kvapil got loose and made contact with Byron. This shot him around and head-first into the outside SAFER barrier. In the process of the crash, a pocket of air caught underneath the Bass Pro No. 1, lifting Kvapil off the ground. In a scary chain of events, Kvapil went barrel rolling down the back straightaway and came to rest upside down.

Immediately after the crash, there was no communication over the radio with Kvapil. AMR Safety Crews were on the scene fast and, once it was determined that Kvapil was all right, they flipped the car over and he was able to climb out of it under his own power. We’re thankful for the safety advancements in these NASCAR racecars. This was a scary crash for sure. Check it out in the footage below.

Fast Notes:

  • Kvapil started the race from the pole due to Connor Zilisch’s win in that car last weekend at Bristol. The semi-regular driver of the No. 1 car is still looking for his first career O’Reilly win, but has shown some serious speed at times over the course of his first two years in the series.
  • Due to his top 5 finish at Bristol last week in the High Rock Vodka No. 9 for JR Motorsports, Kvapil was one of four drivers up for the Dash 4 Cash this weekend. Unfortunately, he is now out of contention.
  • It isn’t often that we see wrecks like this at Kansas Speedway. Thankfully, he was able to climb out under his own power and walk away from the carnage. He was subsequently checked and released from the in-field care center.
