What’s Happening?
A recent report claims that proponents of Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway, the over 100-year-old 0.596-mile short-track in the heart of Nashville, are set to face another political battle in pursuing a renovation for the track.
Spinning Through Music City: NASCAR’s Back and Forth History With Nashville
What’s Happening With cities and tracks dipping in, out, and around the NASCAR schedule, the landscape of the schedule is crazier…
- According to a Mar. 7 report from Nate Rau of Axios Nashville, those opposing the track renovation are expected to pitch “an even more ambitious proposal that would explicitly prohibit racing at the fairgrounds.” Some of the track’s opponents include those supporting affordable housing. However, individuals associated with the neighboring Geodis Park and MLS team, Nashville SC, also oppose the renovation.
- Parties such as local politicians, former drivers, and Speedway Motorsports have pushed for the facility’s renovation since the early 2020s. However, the track’s long-term future has been in political limbo for some time now. This report claims that this issue would not be able to reach a ballot until August 2026.
- The interest in reviving the track is similar to that of Rockingham Speedway and North Wilkesboro Speedway, in North Carolina. However, as the interest in the Nashville market spikes in NASCAR, and the track remains in limbo, NASCAR and SMI have opted to race at the 1.330-mile Nashville Superspeedway in Lebanon, a roughly 45-minute drive from the fairgrounds.
- While Nashville Superspeedway has had decent racing and great attendance, fans and drivers, such as the outspoken Dale Earnhardt Jr, have clamored for a return to the fairgrounds. The Cup Series raced at the track from 1954 to 1984, and the Xfinity Series followed suit from 1995 to 2000. The track currently hosts local racing and has an annual spot on the ARCA Menards Series East calendar
