What’s Happening?
On Tuesday afternoon, NASCAR’s official X account posted an odd message about investing in a NASCAR-themed cryptocurrency. Despite its appearance, the post clearly showed signs of a scam and was taken down shortly after it’s posting.

- The post boasted about $NASCAR, which it claimed was a new digital asset that “revolutionize fan engagement, transactions, and experiences within the motorsports ecosystem.”
- The post claimed that the cryptocurrency was built on Solana, a popular blockchain platform. However, the low quality of the press release attached to the post, among other aspects, was a giveaway that NASCAR’s account was hacked.
- Some users on X reported that the official NASCAR Xfinity Series account and the NASCAR Facebook account featured similar, now-deleted posts. NASCAR was not the only league hacked today; the NBA and at least one of its teams’ accounts were also hacked.
- Accounts of all types, be they individuals, companies, or brands, are often targets of these types of hacks. A well-known example of this happening in sports came at the end of the 2022 MLB lockout when ESPN MLB Insider Jeff Passan’s X account was hacked to promote NFTs.
