What’s Happening?
This weekend, the NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series will head to Dover, Delaware, for a doubleheader on the high concrete banks of Dover Motor Speedway.
- Dover Motor Speedway hosted its first NASCAR Cup Series Race in 1969. Since then, the one-mile speedway has been a staple of NASCAR’s northeastern schedule.
- Dover has hosted the NASCAR Cup Series every season since 1969, including a stretch of doubleheader races from 1971 to 2020. The NASCAR Xfinity Series is no stranger to Dover as well, having raced at the circuit since 1982.
- This weekend marks NASCAR’s return to oval racing, as the first since EchoPark Speedway on Jun. 28, and the first short track points race since Bristol on Apr. 13.

Top Storylines of the Weekend

- Dover marks one race until two drivers will go head-to-head in the final race of the NASCAR In-Season Challenge. This weekend‘s matchups include Ty Dillon versus John Hunter Nemechek and Tyler Reddick versus Ty Gibbs. Most would assume that Reddick is the favorite of the four to win the tournament; however, Dillon and Nemechek have been great underdog stories.
- Dover presents an interesting challenge. It has been several weeks since the NASCAR Cup series has raced on an oval, let alone a short track such as Dover. With almost no other comparable track on the circuit, Dover presents a unique challenge to drivers looking to lock themselves into the playoffs.
- As the NASCAR Cup Series rolls into Dover, only six races remain until the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. Currently, there are only four slots left for an individual winner to lock themselves in the playoffs. Several top drivers, such as Tyler Reddick, Chris Buescher, Alex Bowman, and Bubba Wallace, are sitting on the edge of a playoff birth. While these are all playoff-caliber drivers, it is likely that at least one of them will not make the playoffs in 2025.
