What’s Happening?
The 67th Daytona 500 and annual speed weeks take place from Feb. 12 to Feb. 16. With all three NASCAR National Series racing and a driver ready to put their name in the history books, this is the most important weekend in stock car racing.
- Daytona International Speedway opened in 1959. However, its first race was not the Daytona 500, but a 100-mile race won by Bob Welborn. The Daytona 500 would be the next race on the schedule. Hall-of-Famer Lee Petty won the nailbiter with a listed margin of victory of two feet.
- Since 1959, the Cup Series has raced at Daytona anywhere from two to four times a year, currently hosting two points races a year. The Xfinity Series debuted at Daytona in 1982, and the Truck Series followed suit in 2000.
- Of the last ten Daytona 500s (2015-2024), seven races have had a last-lap incident—with or without a caution flag. This includes last year’s race, which was won by William Byron, who barely won as a wreck happened at the white flag, which meant the caution flag ended the race.

How Does Daytona 500 Qualification Work?
Every Open Entry in the 2025 Daytona 500
What’s Happening? One of the best parts of the Daytona 500 is the open entries. These open or unchartered cars face…
Daytona 500 qualification is different from any other NASCAR Cup Series points race. This is thanks to the two 150-mile Duel Races that take place on Thursday night.
Practice/Qualifying:
- Qualifying will set the front row only. The rest of the qualifying will be divided into two duel races. The 36 Chartered teams are automatically qualified. However, eight of the nine open entries will battle it out in the Duels to see who makes the 40-car field.
Duel Races:
- During the two duel races, the front row starters are locked into position unless they wreck in their duel. The finishing order of these duel races decides the rest of the starting order from third through the 40th.
- The results of the first duel will decide the inside row for the Daytona 500, while the second duel will decide the outside row.
Open Exemption Provisional:
- New in 2025 is NASCAR’s Open Exemption Provisional, which allows a world-class driver automatic entry into a race.
- In the 2025 Daytona 500, four-time Indianapolis 500 Champion Hélio Castroneves is the only driver utilizing an OEP, guaranteeing he is locked into the 500.
- If he does not make it in on speed or in the Duels, the field will expand from 40-cars to 41-cars for Hélio.

These NASCAR Cup Series Champions Have Not Won the Daytona 500
What’s Happening? Feb. 16 marks the 67th running of the Daytona 500. As always, key drivers are looking to take home…
- This season, the Daytona 500 will have a massive nine open entries. This list includes legends like Hélio Castroneves, Jimmie Johnson, and Martin Truex Jr. Other notable open entries include JR Motorsports with Justin Allgaier, and Corey LaJoie in the new part-time No. 01 for Rick Ware Racing.
- The Daytona 500 will not be the debut for drivers with new teams; they did so at the Clash. However, this is the first time we will see what kind of speed these new combos have on familiar territory. 23XI Racing’s new driver, Riley Herbst, and RFK Racing’s new driver, Ryan Preece, have had solid Daytona 500 starts in the past.
- As always, there are future NASCAR Hall of Famers who have yet to win a Harley J. Earl Trophy. For 2015 and 2019 Cup Series Champion Kyle Busch, 2025 will be his 20th year to attempt the 500. Martin Truex Jr, who retired after 2024, will also enter the 500 with TRICON Garage. MTJ has not only not won a Daytona 500, but he has never won a Superspeedway race.
