What’s Happening:

Adam Stern of Sports Business Journal reported this weekend that NASCAR and Netflix agreed to produce another season of NASCAR: Full Speed, the Netflix series that gave an in-depth look at the 2023 NASCAR Playoffs. However, the ongoing NASCAR charter agreement discussions could prevent teams from participating in this season’s production.

• NASCAR: Full Speed was released on Jan. 30. It was a hit with both newcomers to the sport and long-time fans. The show was produced with the help of NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. It featured appearances from Eanhardt Jr, Denny Hamlin, Tyler Reddick, William Byron, Ryan Blaney and ESPN’s Marty Smith.
• The show approached NASCAR’s 10-race Playoffs with a presentation style similar to that of NFL’s Hard Knocks and the ever-popular Formula One: Drive to Survive. The show focused on the drivers in the NASCAR Playoffs, introducing the person rather than the athlete in the fire suit. Race to race, the show followed the in-depth highs and lows of the NASCAR Playoffs, wrapping up with the championship race in Phoenix.
• NASCAR’s charter agreement is a revenue-sharing source for teams and the sport. For the entirety of the 2024 season, this has been a topic of conversation in the sport, with fans, drivers and owners giving their takes on the agreements. The teams and the governing body need to come to an agreement before the end of the season; if not, teams could hold out on entering expensive races and, in an unlikely yet extreme circumstance, join another racing series.
