What’s Happening?

NASCAR has suspended Conner Jones following an incident during Saturday’s NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Jones intentionally wrecked Niece Motorsports’ driver Matt Mills during this race, resulting in a short hospital stay for Mills.

  • On lap 76 of Saturday’s Baptist Health 200 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, tensions boiled over when Conner Jones intentionally wrecked Matt Mills. This move resulted in numerous negative headlines and public outcry from fans, who demanded NASCAR punish Jones.
  • NASCAR announced Wednesday that it is suspending Jones for one NASCAR Truck Series race. Jones’s actions violated the NASCAR Member Code of Conduct, and NASCAR acted accordingly. It should be noted that shortly after the race, Jones publicly apologized to Mills via his X account.
  • Conner Jones is an 18-year-old part-time driver for ThorSport Racing. ThorSport is a top-tier team in the Truck Series and a solid launching pad for a successful career. In two part-time seasons with ThorSport, Jones has made 21 starts and has a best finish of 11th at Charlotte this season.
  • Matt Mills, who races for Niece Motorsports, spent two nights at Jackson South Medical Center following this accident and was released on Monday. Doctors were monitoring Mills’ oxygen levels after the smoke inhalation from the fiery crash. Mills is on the entry list for this weekend’s race.
  • Jones is listed as the driver of the No. 66 this weekend for Friday’s Truck Series race at Martinsville. However, as of 12:30 pm ET on NASCAR.com, part-time driver Johnny Sauter is now the listed driver of the No. 66. Sauter leaves the Hattori Racing Enterprises No. 16 truck open with this move.

Update: 6:00 pm ET: Landen Lewis is taking over the No. 16 for Sauter who is filling in for Jones.
