NASCAR began releasing the list in May, ten at a time, similar to the 50 and 75 Greatest Drivers lists.
A keen eye may notice some important names missing from this list; however, this list is only for drivers in the tour’s modern era, dating back to 1985. This year, the tour is celebrating the 40th anniversary of this era in its history. The modified division is the oldest active series in NASCAR, dating back to 1948.
Those included on both NASCAR’s 75 Greatest Drivers list and the 40 Greatest NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Drivers are NASCAR Hall-of-Fame drivers Mike Stefanik and Richie Evans. The full list of 40 drivers is as follows:

Fans of the NASCAR Cup Series will also notice names like “Mr. Excitement,” Jimmy Spencer, a long-time analyst for the Speed network, two-time Cup Series winner, and two-time modified champion. Fellow two-time Cup Series winner Steve Park, known as Dale Earnhardt Incorporated’s first full-time driver, made the cut as part of the second group unveiled in May.
This list also features several active drivers in the modified tour and NASCAR National Series, such as Ryan Preece, Justin Bonsignore, and Patrick Emerling. All three of these drivers are entered into Thursday night’s modified race, which kicks off a triple header weekend with the Truck and Cup Series at Richmond Raceway.
