What’s Happening?
With the abrupt passing of NASCAR legend Kyle Busch, fans and drivers alike have called for an early or even automatic Hall of Fame induction for the two-time Cup Series Champion, an idea that NASCAR’s Amanda Ellis says is part of ongoing discussions behind the scenes.
Kyle Busch’s tragic passing from an abrupt illness last Thursday came on the heels of what had been a historic week for some of his fellow NASCAR legends. Just two days earlier, the NASCAR Hall of Fame voted to elect drivers Kevin Harvick, Jeff Burton, and Larry Phillips as their 2027 Class.
With the Hall of Fame fresh on the minds of fans, and given Busch’s status as one of the sport’s greatest drivers, there were almost immediate calls for NASCAR to induct Busch to the Hall of Fame as a special inductee for 2027.
Support for this idea quickly rose to the top, as during a Friday press conference, NASCAR CEO Steve O’Donnell did not rule out the idea. Furthermore, Busch’s long-time rival, Brad Keselowski, supported the concept when asked at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Still, there is no official decision from NASCAR yet. During the latest episode of NASCAR’s Hauler Talk podcast, NASCAR Senior Director of Racing Communications Amanda Ellis said officials are discussing a course of action for Busch’s eventual Hall of Fame induction.
For one, Ellis says there would need to be a group discussion among Richard Childress Racing leadership, NASCAR leadership, and other key players on when this would take place.
Specifically, would all parties be okay with waiving NASCAR’s three-year retirement policy, and would that then allow for a 2027 or 2028 induction?
“I think that there’s a group of people that would need to get together officially and formally have that conversation, right? On what that could look like, and is it as soon as the 2027 class, does it become an option for 2028? Where I think most people land is being comfortable with potentially waiving that three year requirement of being out of a race car to be considered for the ballot. I think there’s a couple extra things that do need to be discussed, vetted, and checked if it was to come for him to potentially be on the 2027 or be part of the 2027 class.” — Amanda Ellis
Regarding Busch’s potential automatic induction, Ellis says that this group would also need to discuss what Busch himself would have liked to see, pointing out, for example, that, in her opinion, as one of the sport’s most competitive drivers ever, he could have wanted to be voted on.
“This is just my opinion that Kyle would want to be voted in,” Ellis said. “And I think in some ways, he does deserve that opportunity, to be talked about in the room, to have the full Hall of Fame experience of being officially voted in, and that’s a part of the Hall of Fame, is all the things that go with that.”
Finally, as some fans have pointed out, the Busch family must be considered in the matter. Part of the Hall of Fame process is collecting memorabilia from select drivers and having someone close to them induct them into the Hall of Fame.
Ellis notes that they would need to see how the family feels about the short turnaround time for what will likely be a highly emotional weekend, so close to Busch’s passing.
“I also think there’s an element when it comes to induction and induction week, there’s the Hall of Honor, and there are so many great opportunities to highlight our Hall of Famers during that particular week,” Ellis said. “But, there’s also a lot of behind-the-scenes things that happen with that, and I think it would also be important to know whether the family would be comfortable with all of that, frankly, so soon.”
What do Fans Think?
While the timeline for Busch’s eventual Hall of Fame induction is unclear, fans have suggested several ways to address the matter.
The first and seemingly easiest option is to add Busch to the 2027 class, as in the past classes have gone above the three-driver mark, though adding a driver would be an unprecedented move.
The other, and one that addresses Busch’s competitive nature, would be to hold a special election, perhaps during the fall Charlotte race weekend. This would allow Busch to be formally brought into the Hall while also honoring his passing as a member of the 2027 class.
The final suggestion from fans is to waive the three-year requirement for Busch and add him to the Class of 2028 ballot, ensuring his induction in a timely, yet formal manner.
Still, as Ellis noted, and as some fans continue to point out, the decision should come from the Busch family, as the short turnaround time from passing to induction would be another deeply emotional moment they would have to share with the NASCAR community.
