What’s Happening?
NASCAR’s Steve Phelps recently confirmed that NASCAR is taking part in discussions about NASCAR-related screenplays, though NASCAR’s new Commissioner stressed nothing is set in stone.
- CNBC Sports‘ Brian Sullivan recently asked NASCAR Commissioner Steve Phelps about NASCAR’s future in film and TV, specifically regarding a production similar to Joseph Kosinski’s “F1.” Phelps responded, saying, “We’re into some discussions right now. There are some screenplays that are being written right now that are more drama-related. I can’t get into that.”
- Since the announcement of the F1 movie, NASCAR fans have clamored for a NASCAR film with a serious focus on the racing side of the sport. These fans were likely excited to hear the phrase “drama-related” mentioned by Phelps.
- In particular, fans want a new NASCAR movie akin to 1983’s lighthearted Stroker Ace or a sequel to 1990’s Days of Thunder. With the immense amount of hype surrounding F1 and Days of Thunder star Tom Cruise’s latest Mission: Impossible film, more and more rumors are rolling out about the future of a potential Days of Thunder sequel.
- During this interview, Phelps even brought up Days of Thunder, though he played down a sequel being the future of NASCAR in the film world. “There is a show, and I’m not suggesting this is where we’re going,” Phelps said. “But back in the day, around Top Gun, same director, Jerry Bruckheimer, in Days of Thunder… We’ll see where all that goes. But there [are] other writers, content, screenplays that are being written now, and we’re excited about them in the future for us.”
