What’s Happening?
The saga of NASCAR and Mexico City appears to be at its conclusion. NASCAR plans to announce that the first Cup Series race outside the U.S. since 1958 will be on Father’s Day weekend, Jun. 15th, 2025.
- NASCAR has long wanted to host a race outside the United States. Rumors swirled last year and deep into this year. It now appears the parties have found a date. Jordan Bianchi of the Athletic reports that the two parties may announce the race on Tuesday; however, there is no official word.
- The Cup Series and Xfinity Series will race at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. The Cup Series has never raced at the track or in the country. However, the Xfinity Series raced at the track from 2005 to 2008. The Cup Series last raced outside the U.S. in 1958 at Exposition Stadium in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
- Iowa Speedway currently holds the 17th race weekend. This change of dates follows the previously rumored schedule change for Iowa to Aug. 3rd. However, a schedule “leaked” from the NASCAR Latino X account that NASCAR claimed was inaccurate does not match this date, giving the assumption that NASCAR is telling the truth about that.
Update: In a press conference Tuesday morning from Autódromo, Hermanos Rodríguez, Ben Kennedy, and Daniel Suarez represented NASCAR in announcing the sport’s future at the track and in the country of Mexico.
The points race weekend will be June 13-15. It will be the first tripleheader weekend to feature NASCAR’s Cup, Xfinity, and Mexico Series. The series will run the 2.674-mile Grand Prix Circuit, which features 17 turns.
Via a statement from NASCAR, NASCAR Senior Vice President of Racing Strategy and Development Ben Kennedy, said:
“This is a historic moment for our sport, especially for the NASCAR Cup as it will be able to leave its mark in Mexico, we have been bold in our global growth strategies, so there is no better option to take the next step than racing at the emblematic Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City.” — Ben Kennedy
The race will be live on Amazon Prime Video, part of the new broadcast package for 2025. Ticket registration is already available via the NASCAR Mexico website.
Update: NASCAR will not run the 17-turn layout mentioned in the press release. Rather, it will run a modified version of the F1 Circuit, as Jenna Fry of the Associated Press reported.
Update: Ben Kennedy has confirmed that Richmond will lose its spring date for adding the race in Mexico City.
