COTA is getting a facelift! Circuit of the Americas announced on Wednesday that they will change their track layout for NASCAR starting in 2025. The track will use its 2.3-mile-long national course instead of its traditional 3.4-mile-long Grand Prix circuit. The layout features 19 turns and, most notably, cuts off the long straightaway coming out of the esses. A look at the new design compared to the old layout is shown below.
With a shorter layout, the race weekend at COTA will feature more laps (possibly 30-35 extra) and shorter cautions laps, something fans have begged for since the sport started racing at COTA in 2021. However, with the long straightaway removed, a possible passing zone has been eliminated. One thing to keep an eye out for is track limits, which plagued the race weekend for the past few seasons with the changes in the esses.
The 2025 EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix was initially slated to run 68 laps (231.88 miles). With the new layout, the lap count will likely be increased. The race is scheduled for the third race of the season for the Xfinity and Cup Series on March 1-2. Kyle Larson is the defending Xfinity Series winner while William Byron is the defending Cup Series winner at the track.
