What’s Happening?
NASCAR has fined and penalized Austin Cindric for intentionally wrecking Ty Dillon on the front stretch at Circuit of the Americas Sunday. However, NASCAR will not suspend the driver of No. 2 for his actions due to the time and place of the incident.
- NASCAR fined Cindric $50,000 and penalized him 50 driver points. Cindric’s right rear hooked Dillon on the front stretch of COTA after Dillon’s No. 10 pushed No. 2 off track. The accident, which appeared to be intentional, did not result in a caution.
- On this week’s episode of NASCAR’s Hauler Talk Podcast, NASCAR’s Managing Director of Racing Communications, Mike Forde, stated officials did not suspend Cindric as this incident took place on a road course. “The reasons are, you look at it, it is at a road course (with) lower speeds, tight confines to begin with and the result didn’t even draw a caution.”
- Fans felt that Cindric deserved a suspension following this incident, as NASCAR has precedent for doing so. In 2022, NASCAR suspended Bubba Wallace for one race after wrecking Kyle Larson, and in 2023, officials suspended Chase Elliott for wrecking Denny Hamlin. However, both of those incidents took place on high-speed intermediate ovals (the former happening in Las Vegas and the latter in Charlotte.)
- Under the 2025 Playoff Waiver rules, had Cindric been suspended, he would have been stripped of all current and future playoff points. However, Cindric now sits in 35th with 30 points, down from his former position of 11th with 80 points.
