What’s Happening?
The rivalry between Zane Smith and Carson Hocevar appears to be entering a new phase, and this time it has gone beyond their on-track battles.
Days after the pair were involved in another incident at Chicagoland Speedway, Smith delivered a series of blunt comments during a podcast appearance that quickly went viral, triggering an equally heated reaction from NASCAR fans.
The latest flashpoint between the two drivers came during the Cup Series race at Chicagoland. On Lap 32, Hocevar was turned exiting Turn 2 while leading Smith.
NASCAR ultimately chose not to penalize Smith for the contact, but officials considered the incident significant enough to summon both drivers for a discussion ahead of this weekend’s race at Atlanta.
NASCAR Meeting With Multiple Drivers After Chicagoland Clash

The meeting comes alongside similar conversations NASCAR plans to have with Shane van Gisbergen and Austin Hill following their own run-in at Chicagoland.
While the on-track incident had already generated debate, Smith’s appearance on the Racin’ With The Boys podcast poured fuel on the fire.
During a segment in which host Will Compton asked Smith and 23XI Racing driver Riley Herbst to describe fellow competitors using a single word, Smith wasted little time making his feelings toward Hocevar known, calling the Spire Motorsports driver a “coward.”
And as the conversation continued, he became increasingly candid about what he believes to be Hocevar’s personality, both on and off the racetrack. Smith argued that Hocevar presents two very different versions of himself.
According to the Front Row Motorsports driver, Hocevar often tries to be friendly in person after incidents on track, only to adopt a much tougher persona on social media afterward.
Smith claimed that inconsistency frustrates him most, accusing his former teammate of trying to maintain a friendly relationship in the garage while racing aggressively on Sundays.
He pointed to a previous incident between the two at Iowa, explaining that their hard racing ended up hurting both drivers rather than benefiting either. Smith said there is a difference between racing aggressively and putting both competitors in situations where neither gains anything.
Smith further recalled another moment when he believed Hocevar apologized repeatedly during a race after making contact, only to later post dismissive comments online. That, the FRM driver said, is why he views Hocevar’s online persona differently from his behavior face-to-face.
His strongest criticism came near the end of the interview when he accused Hocevar of hiding behind social media. He labeled that behavior “cowardly,” saying he would rather someone express those same opinions directly in person than switch personalities once they are behind a keyboard.
Beyond that, Smith also targeted Hocevar’s fans, jokingly comparing his fanbase to the stereotypical “keyboard warrior” from South Park. The remark quickly spread across social media and became one of the most discussed parts of the interview.

Fans’ Reaction
Fans quickly split into opposing camps after the clips went viral.
Many defended Hocevar, arguing Smith’s comments suggested he was far more invested in the rivalry than his rival appeared to be. One fan wrote that while they weren’t upset about the Chicagoland incident itself, the interview made it seem as though “Carson lives rent free in his head.”
Others mocked Smith by pointing out that he ultimately finished behind Hocevar after the Chicagoland contact, with one fan joking that Smith “wrecked Hocevar for no reason and ended up wrecking himself.”
Some supporters went even further, accusing Smith of seeking attention or expressing jealousy over Hocevar’s popularity, while others sarcastically questioned whether casual fans could even identify Smith’s car number.
Not everyone sided with Hocevar, however. Several fans agreed with Smith’s criticism, particularly regarding Hocevar’s fanbase.

Some argued that the reaction in the comment sections only reinforced Smith’s point, while others bluntly stated that Hocevar’s supporters had become one of the most polarizing fan groups in NASCAR.
Since arriving in the Cup Series, the Spire Motorsports driver has built a reputation for aggressive racing, outspoken comments, and frequent involvement in controversial incidents. Those qualities have earned him both passionate supporters and equally vocal critics.
With NASCAR already planning to meet with both drivers this weekend, the timing of Smith’s comments could hardly be more significant. Whether the discussion in Atlanta cools tensions remains to be seen.
