What’s Happening?

Tuesday morning, NASCAR Senior Vice President of Competition Elton Sawyer addressed calls for an increase in horsepower during an interview with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

  • During an interview with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio’s The Morning Drive, Sawyer stated that a horsepower increase “is on the table and something that we’re discussing daily.” Sawyer also said that John Probst, NASCAR’s Chief Racing Development Officer, has discussed what a slight boost in horsepower would look like with engine manufacturers.
  • Fans and drivers have clamored for a horsepower boost from the current 650 to 670 HP package in hopes that it could fix lingering issues with NASCAR’s Gen Seven car. Though this boost is unlikely to be a return to the sport’s 900 HP days, most have set their sights on 750 HP, thanks to comments in early May from Roush Yates Engines CEO Doug Yates.
  • In that interview, also with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, Yates claimed a rise to 750 wouldn’t change much for the manufacturers or teams. Yates said, “So if we were to increase the power from 670 horsepower to about 750 horsepower, that probably wouldn’t be much of a change for us.”
  • This started a firestorm of discussion among fans and industry members. NASCAR Managing Director of Racing Communications Mike Forde stated on the May 7 episode of the Hauler Talk podcast that a horsepower increase is something NASCAR officials will “look at seriously.”
