What’s Happening?

Two NASCAR Xfinity Series teams are facing fines and penalties after this past weekend in Talladega. The drivers involved were Austin Green and Matt DiBenedetto, who, alongside their teams, were handed an L1 penalty.

  • NASCAR officials deemed that the No. 87 of Jordan Anderson Racing and the No. 99 of Viking Motorsports violated two sections of the NASCAR rulebook. In particular, these sections were 14.4.A: Body; 14.4.11.C&D: Rear bumper covers.
  • For these bumper cover violations, NASCAR penalized each team and driver 20 points and 5 NASCAR playoff points. NASCAR officials also fined both teams $25,000, though the drivers will not face monetary penalties.
  • DiBenedetto’s No. 99 was among a short list of drivers who failed inspection twice Friday afternoon. The No. 99 lost a crew member and pit selection this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway.
  • Green’s JAR teammate Blaine Perkins also failed inspection twice prior to qualifying at Talladega. The No. 31 team faces the same penalties as the No. 99 team, alongside Aric Almirola’s No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota Supra.
  • Ultimately, the No. 87 failed to qualify for Saturday’s race, posting the 40th fastest time for the 38-car field. In contrast, DiBenedetto and his underdog Viking Motorsports entry posted their best finish yet, walking away fifth after avoiding the last-lap spin of Connor Zilisch.
