NASCAR Drivers Caught Up In Watkins Glen Weather Issues

What’s Happening?

Fans aren’t the only ones struggling with the spring weather of the Northeast this weekend at Watkins Glen International, as the tough conditions have now affected two of the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series fan favorites.

Late last season, when NASCAR announced that Watkins Glen International would move to the spring calendar in 2026, race fans in the Northeast warned that spring was not an ideal time for a race.

Still, the sport continued with the bold move, giving the track in upstate New York its first spring race in its nearly forty years as a consistent stop on the National Series schedule.

Well, as predicted, this weekend has been less than ideal, with cold weather, rain, and mud.

While fans have struggled to get into the track, it seems that drivers are now seeing similar issues, with NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series driver Parker Retzlaff sharing his stuck rental car on X Friday morning, asking, “Anyone got a 4-wheeler that’s in Watkins trying to fish out some rental cars?”

As fans laughed this off online, just over an hour later, his NASCAR OAP Series Chevrolet teammate Rajah Caruth shared trouble of his own, showing his rental car stuck in the mud just behind the JR Motorsports merch hauler.

Both seemed to get out of their predicaments, and as of press time, no other drivers have come forward with mud-related issues.

Watkins Glen Weekend Weather

Wednesday and Thursday’s move-in for campers at the scenic race track was the first sign of things to come, with many sharing videos of their trucks, cars, and campers drowning in mud.

Late Thursday night, The Glen announced two important changes: first, that they were temporarily pausing new camper entry for the evening, and second, that in 2027, the track will return to the fall and NASCAR’s Chase.

While this is some welcome relief for the future, there is still a full slate, four-race weekend with the ARCA Menards, Craftsman Truck, O’Reilly Auto Parts, and Cup Series all set to tackle the track under wet or dry conditions.

Per the National Weather Service, the track is forecast to be in the low to high 50s for the start times of each race this weekend, with rain expected to come and go throughout the weekend.
