What’s Happening?

In a dramatic move, two NASCAR Cup Series teams will switch drivers following this week’s race at Bristol. Both drivers could potentially stay in these rides into 2025. Justin Haley will move to No. 7 at Spire Motorsports, and Corey Lajoie will move to Rick Ware Racing’s No. 51 beginning next week at Kansas Speedway.

  • Corey Lajoie and Spire Motorsports have raced together since 2021, with Lajoie as the team’s first full-time driver. Since then, the second-generation racer has struggled for consistency and, ultimately, to win a race. Spire has had a major Silly Season this year and, in a major move, announced that Lajoie would not return following the 2024 season.
  • Justin Haley came through the NASCAR ranks with Kaulig Racing before a surprise departure prior to this season. Haley saw criticism from fans and insiders for moving to Rick Ware Racing this season. However, with support from RFK Racing, the pair have put up the never-before-seen number in the No. 51.
  • This move is unprecedented. Previous reports suggested that these would be the two drivers’ future landing spots. However, there was no mention of an immediate swap prior to 2025. Most importantly, there is no confirmation that the two drivers will stay in these spots into 2025.
  • If Haley stays with his new team, Spire Motorsports will complete a major overhaul of the team’s lineup, including the additions of Michael McDowell and his Crew Chief Travis Peterson. Haley and Spire have a history dating back to the team’s opening in 2019. Haley won the team’s first race at Daytona in July of that season. He also raced in 30 races for the team in 2020.

**Update: Spire Motorsports owner Jeff Dickerson confirmed that Haley will remain behind the wheel of the No. 7 into 2025. This locks in Spire Motorsports, 2025 roster as No. 7 Justin Haley, No. 71 Michael McDowell, and No. 77 Carson Hocevar. Haley will work with NASCAR Cup Series Champion Crew Chief Rodney Childers.

Furthermore, RWR president Robby Benton says nothing is certain about Lajoie being in No. 51 next year. This move, however, allows RWR to adjust and work with Lajoie.
