Sunday’s dramatic NASCAR Cup Series Championship race at Phoenix Raceway saw Kyle Larson walk away with the championship thanks to a bold call on pit road. But despite the dramatic finish, this race continued a trend of declining viewership for the season finale that dates back to 2022.
Now it is not all doom and gloom, as the race drew 2.774 million viewers on NBC, making it far and away the highest-viewed race of the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs.
Nonetheless, this viewership was 4% less than the 2024 season finale, which drew 2.895 million viewers, also on NBC. Since the 2021 series finale at Phoenix, which drew 3.214 million viewers on NBC, the event has seen a decline in annual viewership.
This descent started slowly, with a decline of just 0.031% in 2022, but a much more dramatic drop of 9.2% in 2023, followed by a 0.856% increase in 2024, and now a 4.180% decrease from 2024 to 2025.
While these are marginal drops in viewership, they have accumulated over the years, resulting in a 13.690% drop in viewership when comparing the 2021 event to this year’s.
This drop was also part of an overall decline in playoff viewership. However, the 18.889% decline in playoff viewership, when put into perspective, was a result of a revamped playoff broadcast schedule that featured seven total playoff races on Cable, compared to just four in 2025.
