What’s Happening?
After a contentious end to Kyle Busch’s Daytona 500, NASCAR has further clarified the rules for its Damaged Vehicle Policy in the rulebook. Busch claimed that, following a late crash, his No. 8 should have had three attempts to return to the race. However, NASCAR rules limited him to one.

- The rule book now clarifies that cars that leave the garage have one attempt to meet speed and “may not re-enter the garage repair area prior to attempting minimum speed.” This is similar to what happened to Busch that evening.
- Busch was confused by recent changes to the DVP policy. Following a multi-car accident on lap 187, in which No. 8 was towed back to the garage for repairs. Busch claimed they put four tires on the car and left the garage area, and with the race still under caution, the No. 8 attempted to return to the garage.
- However, after returning to the garage, Busch was not allowed to return to the race. He later claimed on X that he should have had three attempts under green. One of Busch’s claims was that the race was under caution, and drivers cannot meet minimum speed under caution. However, the rulebook now clarifies that drivers cannot re-enter the garage before they attempt to reach minimum speed.
- This offseason, NASCAR made changes to its DVP. Previously, if a car went to the garage area under DVP, they were out of the race. However, under the new policy, teams have seven minutes to make repairs on pit road and then can head to the garage area for an unlimited amount of time to make repairs.
- Busch’s post-race comments and tweets were a hot topic following the Daytona 500.
