Mexico Off 2026 NASCAR Schedule, Chicagoland a Likely Replacement

What’s Happening?

NASCAR will not return to Mexico City’s Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in 2026, and will likely return to Chicagoland Speedway to fill that slot on the 2026 schedule.

• According to a report from Jordran Bianchi of The Athletic, NASCAR is not returning to Mexico City due to logistics and scheduling conflicts with the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup soccer tournament. Bianchi claims that the race, NASCAR’s first outside the U.S. since 1958, could return in 2027.
• In exchange for the road course, NASCAR is considering a return to Joliet, Illinois’ Chicagoland Speedway, a 1.5-mile oval owned by NASCAR. Bianchi claims that the sport is “solidifying” a plan to race at the track in 2026.
• The track has been mostly abandoned by NASCAR since 2019, but has been boosted back into consideration due to a grassroots campaign. This campaign got its footing thanks to two factors: NASCAR’s solid intermediate oval racing and NASCAR leaving the Chicago street circuit.
• While NASCAR heads to the Streets of San Diego’s Naval Base Coronado in 2026, the sport has already confirmed it will not return to the streets of Chicago. But, much like Mexico City, NASCAR is looking to return in 2027, though Chicagoland will likely bridge the gap in the market for next season.
• In a recent video posted to YouTube, NASCAR Cup Series driver Carson Hocevar explored the dilapidated venue. While the track looked rough, Hocevar explained that it didn’t look too terrible. Bianchi reports that renovations will cost roughly $4 million.
• NASCAR left the venue during the COVID-affected 2020 season but did not return after years of lackluster racing and poor attendance.
