What’s Happening
Another major rumor has come to fruition: Riley Herbst will be the third driver at 23XI Racing for the 2025 season. Herbst brings along sponsor Monster Energy, a brand already well acquainted with 23XI.
- Herbst and his longtime sponsor will join the new No. 35 car in the 2025 season. The team has been hiring for this car for some time, which made the expansion all but confirmed. However, Herbst brings Crew Cheif Davin Restivo from Stewart-Haas Racing with him.
- While not what some fans expected, the No. 35 is, according to Bob Pockrass of Fox Sports, a combination of the last digits of the team’s current car numbers, 23 and 45. This number breaks a trend of Michael Jordan’s jersey numbers being the car number. However, 23 and 45 are the only numbers most associated with Jordan.
- This expansion began as a rumor earlier this season with the closure of SHR. The team put three charters up for sale, with 23XI listed as a potential buyer months ago. However, when fans found out about the team’s new charter, 23XI was not in the best spot.
- 23XI and Front Row Motorsports are currently locked in an antitrust lawsuit with NASCAR and face the loss of their charters prior to 2025. While the teams are appealing a ruling that they will not have charters in 2025, most insiders expected this expansion to go through no matter what.
- Some fans are not excited for Herbst, who has three wins in the Xfinity Series. This is because some fans view him as a “pay driver” due to the rumors surrounding his promotion. Herbst has support from his family’s company, Terrible Herbst, and fans feel this backing, plus that of Monster, earned him this ride.
