What’s Happening?

Tricon Garage will make its NASCAR Cup Series debut in the 2025 Daytona 500 with 2017 NASCAR Cup Series Champion Martin Truex Jr. behind the wheel. This will be Truex’s 20th attempt to win the Great American Race; he retired from full-time racing at the conclusion of the 2024 season.

  • Truex will drive the No. 56 for Tricon in their potential NASCAR Cup Series debut at Daytona. The car will receive sponsorship from Bass Pro Shops and technical support from Joe Gibbs Racing. As expected, Truex’s former Crew Chief, Cole Pearn, will be the Crew Chief.
  • Rumors of this relationship began earlier this month, and several NASCAR insiders backed these rumors. Initially, most expected Denny Hamlin’s 23XI Racing to field the car. However, the team’s ongoing lawsuit with NASCAR may have complicated this arrangement.
  • Tricon, who enters four full-time entries in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, will enter Truex’s longtime number, No. 56, in the race. Tricon is partially owned by former driver David Gilliland and is considered Toyota’s primary Truck Series Team.
  • Truex and Pearn paired together for MTJ’s glory days at Furniture Row Racing and his first season at Joe Gibbs Racing in 2019. Together, the combo of Crew Chief and driver scored 24 wins, 74 top fives, 110 top tens, 12 poles, and one Championship in 179 races. Truex’s best finish in the 500 was second in 2016 when he came up short of Denny Hamlin.
  • Truex will have to race his way into the race in what is a stacked field of open entries, including 2024 Xfinity Series Champion Justin Allgaier and IndyCar legend Hélio Castroneves.
