What’s Happening?
During a recent sit-down with Kenny Wallace, NASCAR legend Mark Martin spoke on what led to his season-long campaign against the NASCAR playoffs, saying that it was “never about me.”
Mark Martin has made waves online throughout the 2025 NASCAR season for his firm stance against the NASCAR playoff system.
Although he has faced pushback from fans and industry members for his negative opinion of the playoffs, Martin made it clear throughout the year that he was speaking up for the fan base.
As Martin said during an episode of Kenny Wallace’s Kenny Conversations podcast, “The fans want someone with a voice to stand up and say what they think,” Martin said. “So I am the race fan’s voice.”
Mark Martin On What NASCAR Doesn’t Want Fans to Know About New Playoff Format: “It’s Not Up to the Fans”
What’s Happening? NASCAR legend Mark Martin recently joined Kenny Wallace for a discussion about the state of NASCAR. During this discussion,…
With the 2026 season in the review mirror, Martin sat down for an interview with Wallace yet again.
While Martin has been outspoken about his love for traditionalism in NASCAR, Wallace asked the former NASCAR Cup Series driver when he realized that the NASCAR Cup Series playoff didn’t work for the betterment of the sport.
The NASCAR Hall of Famer then explained that what led to his campaign against the NASCAR playoffs was not his own opinion, but rather the NASCAR fan base.
“I just listened to the fans, basically. It was not about me. It was never about me. If it was my feelings, I would have never voiced them so loudly. But the fans needed a voice, I heard them.” — Mark Martin
Unsurprisingly, like many fans who now oppose the playoff system, Martin cites the 2024 championship race, in which Joey Logano won an improbable title despite having one of the most inconsistent seasons of his career, as the turning point that led fans to oppose the playoffs.
Perhaps most interesting of all, the 66-year-old claims that, initially, he was not only nervous to speak out against the playoffs, but embarrassed, claiming that people looked at him like he was “crazy.”
“When I first voiced the opinion, I was a little bit embarrassed, because everybody looked at me like I had two heads, like I was crazy, nuts. . . The first time that I spoke out so loudly, it made me feel bad. But I did that for the fans.” — Mark Martin
While NASCAR has yet to announce a new playoff or points system for the 2026 season, rumors strongly suggest they are likely to do so before the February 1 cookout clash at Bowman Gray Stadium.
