Legacy Motor Club SUES Rick Ware Racing’s New Owner

What’s Happening?

Legacy Motor Club has filed a lawsuit against Rick Ware Racing’s new owner, T.J. Puchyr, as part of an ongoing legal battle between the two NASCAR Cup Series teams.

• Legacy Motor Club, owned by NASCAR legend Jimmie Johnson, is suing for tortious interference with a contract, presumably their agreement to purchase a NASCAR Cup Series Charter from RWR for a record-breaking $45 million. Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports reports that Puchyr brokered the deal, which went sour for LMC.
• LMC sued RWR on Apr. 1, claiming the team, which also owns two charters, much like LMC, “wants to back out” of the agreement. RWR claims that they were misled about what year the sale was for, 2026 or 2027. LMC claimed the sale was of a charter currently leased to RFK Racing, while RWR claimed it was for a charter to be leased to RFK in 2026. Due to this lease agreement for 2026, the sale would leave RWR without a charter next season.
• This hectic story further spiraled on Jun. 26, when RWR announced a sale to former Spire Motorsports founder T.J. Puchyr, who revealed plans to maintain both charters and expand to three chartered entries as soon as possible. During an interview with Jenna Fryer of AP Sports, Puchyr also claimed that the LMC lawsuit was meant to “humiliate Rick publicly.”
• Furthermore, according to Fryer’s report, the judge has sided with RWR, and Puchyr also claimed that they were “confident” that they would have both charters in their possession. Prior to the sale of RWR, the team also filed a countersuit against LMC on Jun. 17, claiming the suit had “several errors and misstatements of fact.”
