What’s Happening?
Erik Jones will remain behind the wheel of the No. 43 for Legacy Motor Club past the 2025 season. The former Truck Series Champion has won one race with the team since 2021.
- Seven-time Cup Series Champion Jimmie Johnson and co-owner Maurey Gallagher own Legacy Motor Club. The team arose from the ashes of Richard Petty Motorsports in 2021 when Gallagher purchased majority ownership of the single-car team co-owned by Richard Petty. Petty, a seven-time Cup Series Champion himself, is the team’s ambassador.
- Having struggled since its founding, the team has won one race, with Erik Jones behind the wheel at Darlington in 2022. However, then known as Petty GMS Motorsports, the team rebranded to Legacy MC after Johnson bought a stake in the team in early 2023. Since then, the team has made more moves, bringing on Toyota and hot commodity John Hunter Nemechek at the start of 2024.
- After leaving Toyota and Joe Gibbs Racing, Jones joined Legacy MC in 2021. Once a top prospect in NASCAR, winning a Truck Series title and being a three-time Rookie of the Year, Jones has fallen into the role of the consistent veteran rather than the future series champion that many were hopeful he would be.
- Jones has already had an eventful year after a nasty wreck at Talladega saw him out of action for back-to-back races. Despite this, Jones maintains 28th in points, only one spot worse than last season.
In a statement from the team, Johnson said about Jones:
“I admire his talent and am glad we will have him race for us for the upcoming years. Erik will be a key to helping us turn our program around and we look forward to giving him the tools he needs to go out on Sundays and race for wins and eventually a championship someday.” — Jimmie Johnson
