What’s Happening?
Lawsuits are becoming as common in the NASCAR world as Tyler Reddick wins. In the latest news drop, reporter Matt Weaver reports that Joe Gibbs Racing hired a private investigator to follow former crew chief-turned-Competition Director Chris Gabehart over the offseason, suspecting an illegal transfer of confidential data.
In recent months, it was announced that Gabhart had been hired by Spire Motorsports to serve in the role of the team’s Chief Motorsports Officer. JGR subsequently added Spire Motorsports to the lawsuit and had Denny Hamlin (as the co-owner of 23XI Racing), Bob Jenkins (Front Row Motorsports), and Andy Graves (Toyota) also file over the potential damages that could result from the alleged illegal activity by Gabehart.

This is a complicated issue that only gets messier when you start peeling back all the layers. Gabehart abruptly exited Joe Gibbs Racing in December of 2025. This was following a lengthy run as Denny Hamlin’s crew chief and a role as JGR’s Competition Director. Late last season, Gabehart was named interim crew chief for Ty Gibbs and the No. 54 team. There were reported tensions between Gibbs and Gabehart, which many suggest led to Gabehart’s abrupt exit.
Joe Gibbs Racing formally filed a lawsuit against Gabehart in February of 2026, alleging that Gabehart used “Confidential Information and Trade Secrets” to land the job as Chief Motorsports Officer at Spire Motorsports. It gets even more complicated when it was revealed that Gabehart had a non-compete cause in his contract that took into effect following his departure. This effectively meant that Gabehart could not serve in the same or a similar role as Competition Director for18 months following his exit.
JGR claimed that the role of CMO is practically the same as Competition Director at their company, though Spire refutes this. Spire claims that the office of CMO is a broader role overseeing multiple different and diverse aspects of the team.
We got our first ruling of the case on Monday as a North Carolina judge ruled that Chris Gabehart, in spite of his non-compete clause, could continue to serve with Spire but was forbidden from performing the same duties as under the job description of Competition Director at Joe Gibbs Racing.
This is only the latest news to drop since the court’s ruling. However, it is the first news reporting that Denny Hamlin, who had kind words to say about Gabehart on his podcast, had also filed a claim.
