What’s Happening?

Thursday morning, Hendrick Motorsports driver Kyle Larson crashed his Arrow McLaren No. 17 during the second day of open testing for the 2025 Indianapolis 500.

  • During the early moments of Thursday’s open testing, Kyle Larson drove high on the exit of turn one, hitting the outside wall. He then lost control of his No. 17 and slid back onto the track and into the outside wall in turn two. The 32-year-old exited his car safely after officials put the session under red flag conditions.
  • Larson was released from the care center minutes after the incident while his Hendrickcars.com Arrow McLaren entry was towed off the track. After the incident, Larson told Georgia Henneberry of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network, “Honestly, I’m happy to crash my first IndyCar and live through it.”
  • While the 2025 Indianapolis 500, scheduled for May 25, is more than a month away, this is not how Larons wanted his second attempt at the 500 to start this way. Today’s test, in which the cars were given more boost, is the last open test. After today, the next on-track action for the 2025 Indianapolis 500 will be the opening practice session on May 13.
  • This is the second consecutive year that Larson is attempting to run the “Double,” which features 1100 miles of racing on one day. The first race, the Indianapolis 500, is in Indiana and then the second, NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600, is in North Carolina. Last year, Larson started fifth and finished 18th in the 500 but missed the 600 due to a weather delay in Indianapolis and an early finish at Charlotte.
