What’s Happening?

Juan Pablo Montoya is back in the NASCAR Cup Series. On Friday morning, 23XI Racing announced that the 48-year-old will make a one-off start at Watkins Glen International in September in the No. 50 car. It will be Montoya’s first Cup Series start since the 2014 Brickyard 400.

  • Juan Pablo Montoya competed in the NASCAR Cup Series full-time from 2007 through 2013, driving the No. 42 car for Chip Ganassi Racing. He won three races in his NASCAR career: an Xfinity race at Mexico City in 2007, a Cup Series event at Sonoma in 2007, and a second Cup Series contest at Watkins Glen in 2010. His best season came in 2009 when he made the “Chase” and finished a career-best ninth in the points standings.
  • While Montoya’s NASCAR career was not that impressive, his resume across motorsports speaks for itself. He has an extensive resume that includes 15 IndyCar wins, two Indianapolis 500 triumphs, one IndyCar Championship, seven Formula One Grand Prix victories, including the 2003 Monaco Grand Prix, and three overall wins in the Rolex 24 at Daytona.
  • 23XI Racing has fielded the No. 50 car as a third, non-chartered entry for the 2024 season. The entry debuted at COTA, with Toyota road racing legend Kamui Kobayashi finishing 29th. Top Toyota prospect Corey Heim took the wheel at Nashville and also finished 29th.
