What’s Happening?
Joey Logano could face a fine for actions on pit road after Sunday Nights Cook Out 400 at Richmond. After getting turned by Austin Dillon for the win, Logano’s frustration carried over to pit road after the race.
Racing towards the front all day at Richmond, Logano found himself in a good spot after a late overtime restart. Outracing the car that dominated late in the race, the No. 3 of Austin Dillon, Logano looked en route to his second win of 2024.
That was until Dillon punted Logano heading into the final turn, with Logano slamming into the outside wall and finishing the race 19th. Joey had been on both sides of this story before. Reminders of a back-and-forth scrap with Matt Kenseth in 2015 that is now an iconic moment of the Penske driver’s career.
The radio call of MRN’s Dave Moody, “Matt Kenseth just wrecked Joey Logano,” is rumored to still echo off the walls of Martinsville Speedway. Now Logano has found himself back in the wall on his way to what would have been a much-needed win.
Logano used his words rather than his fists after the race, saying in response to Dillon:
“He’s a piece of crap. He sucks. He’s sucked his whole career. And now he’s going to be in the playoffs; good for him, I guess.” — Joey Logano
Initially lost in Logano’s post-race comments, was an incident with Logano on pit road after the cool-down lap. Initial footage showed a frustrated driver spinning his wheels in front of the No. 3’s pit box. However, the onboard footage tells a different story.
Driving to the inside of other cars going down pit road, Logano sped up at what could be assumed to be the site of the No. 3’s pit board. However, crew members, NASCAR officials, and family were in the pit stall.
Logano didn’t stop there, spinning his wheels and driving off before being confronted by a NASCAR official.
This incident brings to mind the 2011 Darlington skirmish on pit road between Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch, in which both were fined $25,000 after a disgruntled Harvick parked in front of Busch and Busch pushed Harvick’s now uncontrolled car out of the way, endangering those on pit road.
Logano’s move is more questionable than Busch’s, as Logano was behind the wheel and in control of the car the entire time. Most fans pointed this out from the onboard view, with media personalities like Jeff Gluck of the Athletic predicting a $50,000 fine could be in store for the two-time Cup Series Champion.
Currently, NASCAR has yet to levy fines to Dillon or Logano. Tuesday is the day that fines and penalties are released, and some believe that, at the least, Logano will see consequences for his actions.
As this is a developing story, when and if those fines are released, we will have them covered on the Daily Downforce.
