What’s Happening?
Joey Logano won the pole on Saturday’s qualifying session at Phoenix, his 3rd at the track. With a speed of 135.537 mph and a time of 26.561, Logano beat the previous Gen 7 record at the track, set by Martin Truex Jr in the 2024 championship race, when he won the pole with a lap of 26.718 seconds and 134.741 mph. The faster lap times are largely due to increased horsepower. From 2022 to 2025, the Cup Series had an engine with 670HP, and for 2026, that number has been increased to 750HP.
The all-time track record stands, however. Set by Jimmie Johnson in the 2015 Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500, with a time of 25.147 seconds and a speed of 143.158 mph, 1.571 seconds faster than the Gen 7’s quickest lap. This record was set in a season that combined high horsepower with high downforce

Starting Lineup

Notes
- Brad Keselowski, Chris Buescher, and Riley Herbst had flat tires in practice, which is the reason Keselowski was unable to turn a qualifying lap and will start last.
- Tyler Reddick spun in practice but didn’t have any damage.
- Zane Smith’s team was penalized for making unapproved adjustments. The car chief has been ejected from the Phoenix event, and the 38 will start at the tail of the field and serve a drive-through penalty after taking the green flag.
The No. 38 in the NASCAR Cup Series was observed making an unapproved adjustment to the underbody during practice/pre-qualifying adjustments. The vehicle was reinspected prior to practice/qualifying session.

Ones to Watch
- Team Penske: Penske has been the team to beat at Phoenix since the introduction of the Next Gen car. Besides the vast stat line and the number of wins, the cars have shown great speed in practice, both on the short and long run. They’re lining up 1st, 3rd, and 5th.
- Tyler Reddick: Reddick is seeking his 4th consecutive win, and despite his history at Phoenix not being particularly favorable, he has momentum and starts 8th.
- Christopher Bell: If you need a flat short track specialist, call Christopher Bell, and Phoenix is just that. He is the defending winner of this event and starts 12th.
- Denny Hamlin: Hamlin came close to finally taking his first championship trophy home in last season’s finale, but it can’t be forgotten how dominant he looked. Though his practice speed wasn’t thrilling, Hamlin cannot be counted out of this race. He starts 11th.
Honorable Mentions:
- Ross Chastain, Carson Hocevar, Josh Berry, Kyle Larson
