What’s Happening?

This weekend, Denny Hamlin is racing his classic FedEx No. 11 at Phoenix. However, while we could see them back on the No. 11 in 2025, this could be the final ride for FedEx and the No. 11. Several fans online are asking this question entering Phoenix. So, what do we know so far and who are those saying this could be the end?

  • FedEx began its tenure in NASCAR with Joe Gibbs Racing in 2005.
  • That relationship spun into 47 wins for Denny Hamlin with Fedex on the hood of his Chevrolets and Toyotas.
  • In recent years, FedEx, like many sponsors from NASCAR’s past era, has cut back its support of the No. 11 substantially.

The End, or Just More Cut Backs?

While FedEx continued to cut back on its sponsorship of Hamlin in the past few seasons, most expected them to stick around. However, a late September report from Adam Stern suggested that this relationship could end at the conclusion of the season.

While they could stick around, there is no word as to whether Sunday will be the end of the road for what has been a highly successful venture on track for JGR, Hamlin, and FedEx. But to keep it positive, there is no official word yet on whether this is for FedEx and JGR.

It would be sad to see JGR lose such an iconic sponsor, and filling that gap will be just as hard. JGR was once the leading rumor mill candidate to land Kroger. However, that brand is heading for RFK Racing with the promise of a third ride at the Ford team.

If FedEx does call off the relationship at the end of the year, JGR won’t be the only place Fedex has canceled sponsorship as they dropped the naming rights for the Washington Commanders stadium prior to this season.

While they used to cover the No. 11 for full seasons, this season, including this week at Phoenix, FedEx will have sponsored just 14 races for Hamlin. This is an improvement from 2023 but far from their 30-race 2022.

If FedEx Leaves, What Is Their Legacy?

FedEx first began racing with JGR in 2005, and Hamlin took over that ride later that season. Since then, the two have gone to victory lane 47 times. These wins include three Daytona 500s, and a handful of other iconic crown jewel race wins for the brand.

This makes FedEx as iconic as STP with Petty, Lowe’s with Johnson, and Dupont with Gordon. Furthermore, and in keeping with that company, FedEx would be remembered for its iconic paint schemes, be that the multi-colored Ground, Express, and Freight or the recent white schemes.

While everyone hopes to see FedEx back on the No. 11 in 2025, nothing is for sure right now. So, we need to savor seeing this iconic combo on the track this weekend.
