What’s Happening?
The World Cup is set to take center stage in the sports world in 2026, but that won’t be without crossing paths with the world of NASCAR along the way.
NASCAR’s Official 2026 Broadcast Schedule Revealed
What’s Happening? Freshly off the end of the 2025 season, NASCAR has released the official 2026 broadcast schedule for all three…
In June, the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts and the NASCAR Cup Series will host their annual race weekend at Pocono Raceway in Blakeslee, Pennsylvania.
The summer months are usually a safe bet for NASCAR to take center stage in the Philadelphia television market, as the Phillies are kicking off the dog days of the MLB’s summer stretch, the Philadelphia Eagles are in their offseason, and, barring deep championship runs, the Flyers and 76ers are off the map as well.
Even when the track had two weekends a year, the races bookended the summer stretch of NASCAR’s schedule.
This planning has paid off, as the track tends to have one of the best crowds every season, announcing in 2025 that the race sold out all 3,300 available camp sites, and sold out its grandstand seating as well days before the event.
But, race fans are already noticing that when the sport rolls into Pennsylvania in 2026, they are facing a choice, as NASCAR will be far from the most important event happening in Eastern Pennsylvania.
The 2026 World Cup in Philadelphia
Every four years, the world’s premier international soccer tournament, the FIFA World Cup, takes center stage, and in 2026, it takes place in North America, from Mexico, all the way to Canada.
The Group Stage is set to kick off from June 11 to June 27, and several major American cities will host matches in the group stage.
These cities include Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, New Jersey, the San Francisco Bay, Seattle, and Philadelphia.
As would be NASCAR’s luck, the first match at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field, between Ecuador and the Ivory Coast from Group E, directly interacts with the NASCAR Cup Series race at Pocono, and race fans are now wondering if this will have any effect on the sport’s massive attendance at the Tricky Triangle.
Is There a Conflict Here?
While it’s easy, and somewhat correct, to assume that not all NASCAR fans are soccer fans, and not all soccer fans are NASCAR fans, it is important to understand that any World Cup match, no matter the Countries, is a big deal.
For example, the matchup between Ecuador and the Ivory Coast is running above $500 a ticket, while relatively low for the World Cup, it is still a major event for the city, state, and country.
But, as the World Cup only takes place once every four years, there is a chance that some race fans could stick around Philadelphia to catch this match.
After all, it will be a decision, as the green flag is set to drop for the NASCAR Cup Series race at Pocono at 3:00 PM EST, and the start of the first match nearly two hours away in Philadelphia will be at 6:00 PM EST.
It is, however, worth noting that they have six more matches they can catch at Lincoln Financial Field for the rest of the month, and, once again, diehard race fans in the region will have to decide between the two events, something that might be a no-brainer for those with soccer on the mind.
Of course, there is no clear answer to what will happen in June; though, there is a strong likelihood that both events will get their target audience in the door for their respective event.
While there might not be a battle between the two, much like they have in the past, the real battle will be for TV ratings, with five World Cup Matches, including the Final in East Rutherford, New Jersey, taking place on Sundays.
