What’s Happening?

A recent listing of items for sale on Facebook has NASCAR fans asking if 2017 NASCAR Cup Series Champion Martin Truex Jr is “done” with the sport in its entirety.

Update: 8:30 PM ET: Truex addressed the sale of these items in a post on Instagram, saying they were “sold without my knowledge” and that “all of these items holds a special significance to me.”

Though he retired from full-time NASCAR action last fall, most NASCAR fans expected Martin Truex Jr to stick around the sport in some way.

While most new he was likely to race in the 2025 Daytona 500, there was a chance the 45-year-old future hall of famer could pick up more races as the year went on. Even shortly after his retirement, Truex left the door open to doing so, claiming he’d also like to enter some NASCAR Xfinity Series races “here and there.”

Truex would keep his promise to compete in the 2025 Daytona 500, teaming up with TRICON Garage and his former Crew Chief, Cole Pearn, for a disappointing 38th-place finish. But since then, the fan base has been met with silence. No other planned Cup Series starts, no Xfinity Series races, and no updates, just radio silence.

Throughout the season, fans wondered if Truex was stepping away from the ever evolving sport entirely, as some legends like Tony Stewart have done so in recent years. However, these flames have re-ignited after several interesting items of Truex’s were listed for sale on the Race Day Authentics Facebook Group.

Do YOU Want to Be a NASCAR Regular Season Champion?

While drivers will part ways with memorabilia from their careers, including everything from helmets, fire suits, and even trophies, the items, or former items, belonging to Truex for sale take that idea to another level.

Among the items listed are:

  • Truex’s NASCAR 50 Greatest Drivers Shirt
  • Truex’s NASCAR 50 Greatest Drivers 1 of 1 Stop Watch
  • A Customized Seven-Pound Diecast Featuring His Three Toyota Numbers and Different Sponsors
  • The Trophy and Flag From His Final Career Win at New Hampshire in 2023
  • The 2017 NASCAR Cup Series Regular Season Championship Trophy
  • The 2023 NASCAR Cup Series Regular Season Championship Trophy

On X, many NASCAR fans responded to this listing, suggesting that Truex is “done” with the sport. Users like @KensethFan17_20 posted, “He’s done. I don’t blame him at all,” and Daniel Baldwin of DannyBTalks compared this to Doc Hudson’s “just an empty cup” line from Disney’s CARS.

In the eyes of fans, these items are not just trinkets; even the base of the diecast comes with a personalized inscription from Toyota stating, “Congratulations on your championship career. Thank you for the partnership, success, and a lifetime of memories.“

But to Truex, who won 34 career Cup Series races, 13 Xfinity Series races, two Xfinity Series Championships, and the 2017 Cup Series title, there’s a likelihood he is comfortable moving on from these somewhat ‘ceremonial items’. After all, it’s not like he’s selling off his Cup Championship, either of his Xfinity Series Championships, or even the trophy from his first Cup Series win (for now).

In fact, this is commonplace in NASCAR, with a well-known collector in the NASCAR community, known by his username @wimmer33fan, citing a similar sell-off that Hall of Famer Dale Jarrett had in recent years.

While we cannot rule out Truex wanting to step away from the sport fully after what should have been a picture-perfect final race at Daytona, there is no confirmation from the NASCAR legend that he is done with NASCAR or racing at all.

So, for now, fans will have to wait and see if MTJ hits the track again. In the meantime, if anyone has a say, $4250, you can tout that you are a two-time NASCAR Cup Series Regular Season Champion, after all, no one keeps up with who actually wins the Regular Season title, right?
