After other special paint schemes with partners such as Ryder and Panini, the truck will carry a sky-blue No. 33 with “Malcolm in the Middle” on the hood.
The actor-turned-driver made his name in the sitcom, playing the lead role across 150 episodes from 2000 to 2006.
His time on the show during its original run brought Muniz an Emmy nomination and two Golden Globe nominations. The tie-in lands on the same day as the reboot; Malcolm in the Middle Life’s Still Unfair drops four episodes, premiering on Hulu.
Muniz announced the paint scheme on his X account, saying, “On Friday, April 10th, the Malcolm in the Middle family explodes back onto @Hulu on Disney+ with Life’s Still Unfair… and the exact same day, I’m strapping in and driving the Malcolm in the Middle truck at Bristol Motor Speedway! My childhood. My chaos. My racing life.”
Racing and Acting
After turning to racing in 2023, Muniz has kept one foot in each camp, acting and driving.
In December 2024, it was confirmed he would return for a reboot of the sitcom. The project is directed by Ken Kwapis and written by Linwood Boomer, Michael Glouberman, Matthew Carlson, Gary Murphy, and Al Higgins. The call sheet brings back Bryan Cranston, Jane Kaczmarek, and Boomer, while Erik Per Sullivan, who played Dewey, chose not to return.
And while fans and Muniz are excited about the return of the sitcom, it was revealed that Muniz’s calendar proved the sticking point in lining up the cast, with his shift to full-time racing driving the crunch. That’s why production moved from a Monday-to-Friday schedule to a Sunday-to-Thursday run so he could keep his NASCAR Craftsman Truck seat time.
In an interview with Zack Sharf of Variety, Muniz said the return changed his view of his craft as an actor. “It was the first time in my career as an actor that I was happy to have the label ‘actor.’ When I was a kid, I just showed up and said the words, and it all worked out. Now, I’m making a plan going into the scene. Doing the prep makes the process really, really fun.”
On the track, he has been making progress, but it has been slower. After a 26th-place finish last season, with one top ten at Daytona, Muniz, through five starts this year, has two top 20 finishes, and sits 22nd in the driver standings.
