What’s Happening?

On Wednesday, Matt Tifft, a former NASCAR Cup Series driver and team owner, posted a photo of an abandoned NASCAR racetrack on his X account, asking, “Should we save a lost speedway?” This post and the potential revival of this track have caused a stir among NASCAR fans online.

The post is ominous and not exactly clear as to whether or not Tifft is actually interested in purchasing and reviving the former racetrack. Nonetheless, a potential revival of the track, suspected to be the 0.440-mile Mansfield Motor Speedway, has caused a commotion among fans and even one former driver.

Despite the vague nature of Tifft’s comments on the track, online responses have ranged from curiosity to nostalgia about the long-time dirt and asphalt venue. Even former Truck and Xfinity Series champion Greg Biffle chimed in on X, saying, “I want it.”

Tifft raced in all three NASCAR National Series from 2014 to 2019. However, partway through his rookie Cup Series season in 2019, Tifft stepped away from racing due to health problems, before becoming a part-owner of Live Fast Motorsports with B.J. McLeod in 2020. The two sold their Charter, and Tifft left his duties with the team in late 2023.

What he could do with the track, which most recently raced as a dirt track, is unknown. Tifft is well known for his business acumen and was a member of the 2022 Forbes 30 Under 30 Class. He has also recently returned to racing in divisions like Dirt Modifieds and Late Model Stocks.

Mansfield Motor Speedway

Mansfield Motor Speedway, once a stop on the Craftsman Truck Series schedule, is located in Mansfield, Ohio. From 2004 to 2008, the track hosted five Truck Series events. In 2017, the track’s asphalt surface was removed, and it was reverted to a dirt track. Mansfield has not hosted a racing event since 2019.

A report from Lou Whitmire of the Mansfield News Journal in late 2020 stated that the track was “no longer a race track.” This report also claimed that the owner was “selling most of the property for industrial use, and the valuable assets will be sold at auction.” According to the photos from Tifft, the track itself is in rough shape, with the grandstands in similar, if not better, shape.
