What’s Happening?

In a recent interview, former Formula One prospect and NTT IndyCar Series driver Pietro Fittipaldi expressed his interest in driving Trackhouse Racing’s Project91 “All-Star” car.

At 29 years old, Pietro Fittipaldi has hopped around major racing circuits for a couple of years now. While the list of potential non-NASCAR drivers of Trackhouse Racing’s Project91 is lengthy, the former open-wheel driver recently told Frontstretch, “Of course, it would be amazing” to drive the part-time entry.

He also expressed that NASCAR is something he has wanted to try for some time now. He said that during his stint in IndyCar for the Rick Ware Racing/Dale Coyne Racing partnership in 2021, there was a chance he could enter a road course race with RWR, but as he said, “at the end, it didn’t happen. But I was super excited to do it.”

Project91 has given rides in NASCAR to former Formula One World Champion Kimi Räikkönen, former V8 Supercars Champion (turned full-time Trackhouse driver) Shane van Gisbergen, and four-time Indianapolis 500 Champion Hélio Castroneves. The car is also one of just three unchartered or “open” cars to win a NASCAR Cup Series race since the charter system’s introduction in 2016.

Fittipaldi is the grandson of Emerson Fittipaldi, a two-time Indianapolis 500 Champion, 14-time Formula One Grand Prix winner, and two-time World Champion.

The family has a history in NASCAR’s top level. His cousin, Christian Fittipaldi, had a rather disappointing 16-race stretch with Petty Enterprises in 2002 and 2003. Pietro is also a former track champion at the iconic 0.363-mile Hickory Motor Speedway.

With one of the most well-known last names in racing, Fittipaldi made his F1 debut in 2020 with the Haas F1 Team to finish out the season for an injured Romain Grosjean. He started and finished no higher than 17th in these two starts for the team.

After this short stint, Fittipaldi returned to the role of reserve driver and made three starts in the NTT IndyCar Series in 2021. In 2024, he made his full-time debut in IndyCar with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.

He currently races for Pratt Miller Motorsports in the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship LMP2 Class.
