- Though the longtime NASCAR Cup Series driver retired from full-time racing after the 2018 season, McMurray continues to make part-time starts. This race will serve as his debut in the SMART Modified Tour and a special moment as he will race against his son, Carter McMurray.
- While this could seem like a family-related affair on the surface, McMurray, who has not raced in NASCAR since 2021, is likely trying to find some seat time before his return to NASCAR later this season with Kaulig Racing’s Truck Series team at San Diego’s street race at Naval Base Coronado.
- In that race, McMurray will join the rotating cast of drivers in the No. 25 that includes familiar faces like Clint Bowyer and Tony Stewart. So far, the best returning performance in the truck this year has come from Colin Braun, who finished ninth on the streets of St. Petersburg.
- Though he is semi-retired, McMurray has yet to disappear from the sport, serving as a weekly analyst for the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series on The CW and as a pre- and post-race analyst for FOX Sports and TNT Sports.
