Hunter Megowen is one of the most well-known faces in the online RV creation space. His YouTube Channel, The RV Hunter, has well over 90,000 subscribers, and his Facebook and Instagram accounts, which range from tours to reviews, each reach over half a million followers every week.
Still, despite all his time working in and around the industry, as well as having a personal love for camping and RVs, Megowen had yet to check one major box off the bucket list camping experiences: the infield camping experience at a NASCAR race weekend.
While some might suggest that Megowen start at a historic track like Darlington Raceway, or one known for its closeness to the great outdoors like Watkins Glen, his first time camping at a NASCAR race was a dive headfirst into the deep end, setting up shop for Talladega Superspeedway’s spring race weekend.
Talladega, specifically a strip of what was once Anniston Air Force Base’s runway, now known as Talladega Boulevard, has a reputation for wild parties and all-nighters that have transcended the NASCAR community and earned it its own online reputation.
Still, Megowen, who is family-oriented, said that, for the most part, the infield camping experience at Talladega was far from the wild parties shown online (if you stay away from Talladega Boulevard).
“I heard Talladega was absolutely crazy, and don’t get me wrong, at night it definitely is,” Megowen said. ”But during the day, everyone is buddies. I actually had dinner with three sets of people that I didn’t know each night that I had met during the day.”
But the campground wasn’t the only first-time experience for Megowen, who was also attending his first-ever NACSAR race weekend as a whole. As someone who admits not having come from a racing family, the racing was top-notch.
“I didn’t realize how athletic the drivers are,” Megowen said. ”Obviously, I knew they had skill. I didn’t realize there was that much skill just being that close to each other. It’s pretty insane to see up close.”
Of course, for someone who is a veteran of the camping world, Megowen’s real notes came from the camping experience itself, and not just the nightlife or racing, and luckily for Talladega, it passed with flying colors.
“It was incredible,” Megowen said. ”That’s everything that you want when you’re going camping. . . I think it was a very healthy mixture of getting alone time, but also you could just pop in somewhere, and people were always grilling out some burgers.”
While Talladega may have a reputation to uphold, the weekend left RV veteran hooked, with no doubt that he will be back in the campgrounds again.
