What’s Happening?
Following a controversial end to Saturday Night’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race, NASCAR’s Amanda Ellis revealed on the latest episode of NASCAR’s Hauler Talk podcast that several drivers contacted NASCAR about the sports officials’ decision not to throw a caution flag.
- The Feb 22nd Xfinity Series race at Atlanta ended under green flag conditions. NASCAR made this decision despite a front-to-mid-pack crash that collected multiple drivers on the final lap. In this week’s episode of Hauler Talk, NASCAR’s Sr. Director of Racing Communications, Amanda Ellis, revealed that drivers contacted NASCAR about this decision.
- In this episode, Ellis states, “So, drivers can call our officials; they have cell phone numbers for them. They are welcome to pick up the phone and call them. And that did happen. You know, there was a driver or two that did make that call.” Ellis also claims that drivers expressed concern in the infamous driver group chat following the decision not to throw the caution flag.
- As a result, reports from Sunday morning’s Cup Series drivers meeting claimed that NASCAR was taking the blame for this decision. NASCAR’s Vice President of Competition Elton Sawyer even stated during the meeting that the failure to throw the caution flag was “on us.” Hauler Talk also shared a recording of exactly what Sawyer said during the meeting 5:50 into Wednesday’s episode.
- Sawyer also stated in the driver’s meeting, “So a situation that comes up today, like last night, will be a caution.” Of course, a similar accident did occur on the last lap of Sunday’s race, and, as promised, NASCAR threw the caution flag to the dismay of some fans. Both Saturday and Sunday’s races compounded a series of last-lap caution controversies happening early on in the 2025 season.
