What’s Happening?

As NASCAR’s summer run comes to an end, the question on a lot of fans’ minds is what the 2027 NASCAR National Series schedule will hold.

Though Silly Season is a hot topic of conversation, the summer months usually hold all the new or returning additions to the schedule, and this year was no different, with the San Diego Street Circuit’s debut and the return of Chicagoland Speedway.

In fact, since 2021, NASCAR has added at least one new or returning race to the Cup Series schedule each season.

  • 2021 – COTA, Nashville Superspeedway, Road America, Indianapolis Motor Speedway (Road Course)
  • 2022 – Auto Club Speedway
  • 2023 – Chicago Street Circuit
  • 2024 – Iowa Speedway, Brickyard 400
  • 2025 – Mexico City
  • 2026 – San Diego Street Circuit, Chicagoland Speedway, North Wilkesboro Speedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway Fall (Oval)

This trend has left fans grasping for any clue as to where NASCAR could be looking to go next, and a new report may have just given fans a clue.

During an interview with Adam Stern of Sports Business Journal, NASCAR CEO Steve O’Donnell said that for fans curious as to where the sport is looking to take races to “where we are not,” meaning regions or markets still untapped by the sport.

In this report, where O’Donnell also claimed NASCAR is still looking at international race dates but is still keeping an eye on the US, Stern made a follow-up note to the “where we are not” comment, mentioning the Pacific Northwest.

Though this is far from a confirmation that the sport could head northwest for 2027, the region is relatively untapped by NASCAR, especially this season.

After a four-year run with a spot on the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series schedule, Oregon’s Portland International Raceway was removed from the schedule.

The move to take the OAP Series out of Portland was unpopular with some fans, including, of course, those in the region, as it left major markets like Portland and Seattle’s closest National Series race weekend over 9 and 12 hours away at California’s Sonoma Raceway.

Beyond that region, and looking internationally, this report also confirmed that NASCAR is still interested in top series races in Canada and Europe for the future.

While each has its own local NASCAR racing series, Canada has been a fixture of NASCAR rumors for the better part of the 2020s, with fans hopeful the sport’s National Series could return to Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, or Clarington, Ontario’s Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

Unfortunately for fans north of the U.S., rumors of Canada’s return have cooled off this season.

Current 2027 Rumors

There are, of course, plenty of rumors for the 2027 season, though most of these focus on returning venues, rather than new ventures for the sport.

Out west is NASCAR’s San Diego Street Circuit at Naval Base Coronado, which most figured would host a one-off event. But since it was a success, NASCAR is openly discussing a return for the 2027 season.

Then, in the Midwest, is the story of Chicagoland Speedway, which was kicked from the schedule in 2020 and returned to fanfare this season, and the Chicago Street Circuit.

With rumors picking up that the Chicago Street Circuit could return in 2027, fans figured that Chicagoland would be left out to dry again, given the fact that both races could crowd the market, something that NASCAR says is not necessarily the case.
