Dennis Hamlin, the 75-year-old father of Denny Hamlin, passed away from injuries sustained in a massive house fire that destroyed the family’s North Carolina home on Sunday night.
Gaston County officials confirmed Monday afternoon that Dennis Hamlin died as a result of the blaze, while his wife, Mary Lou Hamlin, Denny’s mother, remains in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.
The fire erupted around 6:20 PM on Blacksnake Road in rural Stanley, about 30 minutes northwest of Charlotte. Firefighters from nearly a dozen departments battled the fire for hours, shuttling water in tanker trucks due to the lack of nearby hydrants. By the time crews arrived, around 40% of the 3,724-square-foot home, was already engulfed.
Both Dennis and Mary Lou managed to escape the flames and were found outside when first responders arrived, but they suffered severe injuries in the process. Despite the efforts, the home was declared a total loss. Firefighters were able to salvage valuable items from the garage, including expensive cars and cherished racing memorabilia tied to Denny’s career.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Denny has often spoken emotionally about the sacrifices his dad made for his racing career, especially throughout the 2025 season as his father’s health declined due to serious illness. Just months ago, after clinching his 60th Cup Series win in Las Vegas, an emotional Denny tearfully dedicated the victory to his dad, who couldn’t be there in person.
Denny revealed he believed 2025 might be his last shot at a championship with his father watching, coming agonizingly close, finishing runner-up to Kyle Larson at Phoenix after dominating the weekend. Dennis even kept a special cigar from 23XI Racing co-owner Michael Jordan, saving it to celebrate Denny’s first Cup title, a moment that now will never come.
Denny Hamlin has not yet made a public statement.
