Rucker, a South Carolina native and long-time NASCAR fan, announced his addition to the team’s ownership during an interview on The Dan Patrick Show on Wednesday Morning.
“We just decided to do this, and we can announce now that I’m one of the investors and one of the owners of Legacy Motor Club” — Darius Rucker on The Dan Patrick Show
Though his investment in the team is a surprise, Rucker, a long-time friend of team owner Jimmie Johnson, was recently seen wearing LMC gear with Johnson at the 2026 BFGoodrich Mint 400 off-road race in Nevada.
Rucker joins LMC ownership one year after Johnson became the majority owner of the team once known as Petty GMS Racing. Prior to that, Johnson joined the team as a co-owner ahead of the 2023 season.
Since Johnson’s addition to ownership, the team has switched from Chevrolet to Toyota, a change that resulted in some growing pains in 2024.
However, in 2025, the two-car team, with drivers Erik Jones and John Hunter Nemechek, improved drastically, with each driver besting their 2024 stats. This season, LMC confirmed they were collaborating with the top Toyota team, Joe Gibbs Racing, a move that could help the team continue to improve on track.
In 2027, the team plans to grow to three cars with the addition of a third charter, though the driver of this third car has yet to be announced.
As of press time, LMC has yet to officially announce Rucker as a member of LMC’s ownership group.
