As usual, the battle for spots at the back of the field in the Clash at the .250-mile Bowman Gray Stadium was close and hard-fought. Some of the drivers caught in the middle of these battles in the first half of Wednesday night’s race were Bubba Wallace, Daniel Suárez, and Shane van Gisbergen.
On lap 97, van Gisbergen ran Suárez, his former Trackhouse Racing teammate, up the track, leading to a challenging back-and-forth battle between Suárez and Bubba Wallace, coming to the race’s halfway break.
Wallace and Suárez continued their battle after the halfway flag flew, with Wallace even running the No. 7 into the ball field under caution.
Before the cars exited the track, Suárez told his team over the radio:
“Tell the spotter of the 23 that if he does that one more time, I’m going to kick his fucking ass, and [tell] the No. 97 im coming for him.” — Daniel Suárez
Even though Suárez has yet to complete his first race as a non-Trackhouse driver, he seemingly has no patience for his former teammate van Gisbergen, who asked his team, “Is the 7 [Suárez] beefing with everyone?” after their most recent on-track battle.
At the halfway mark, the No. 7 was in 18th, the No. 23 was in 17th, and the No. 97 was in 15th, with Ty Gibbs leading the field.
