What’s Happening?

Long-time Richard Childress Racing prospect Jesse Love will drive the No. 21 for Wood Brothers Racing in 2027, bringing an end to one of the most talked-about storylines of 2027 NASCAR Silly Season.

Love, the reigning NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series Champion, will take over for driver Josh Berry at the conclusion of the 2026 season.

Berry, who signed with WBR ahead of the 2025 season, announced his departure from the team last week, with the family-owned organization promising a driver announcement in due time.

For some time now, rumors, some of which date back to last summer, have suggested that Love was interested in going full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series.

While most assumed a full-time gig would be with RCR, as time went on, that tune changed, with the 21-year-old’s name tied to teams from all three manufacturers.

Though Wood Brothers Racing may not be the marquee, title-contending ride that many thought Love could land at the Cup Series level, his signing does place him in the Team Penske family.

This relationship between WBR and Penske brings to mind their past arrangements in which drivers like Ryan Blaney got their start with the No. 21 before being brought in-house by Penske after adjusting to Cup Series competition.

Of course, long-term plans will have to come from on-track results, as Love has just a handful of NASCAR Cup Series starts to his name at this point in his career.
