What’s Happening?
It was a loooonnnnggg night at EchoPark Speedway just south of the city Atlanta, Georgia. While the first stage was run without incident with Ryan Blaney going on to lead every lap and sweep the stages, there was a huge hiccup when weather rolled into the area, triggering a caution subsequently followed by a red flag when lightning strikes were spotted in the area. This resulted in a lengthy rain delay of over 3 hours and the race did not restart until after midnight with 137 laps still remaining in the race.
While it looked like the Fords had the field by a stranglehold early with Blaney and Logano sweeping the top two positions in the first two stages, they relinquished control during slow pit stops following the conclusion of the stage. Following Stage 2, Ty Gibbs took control of the race by winning the race off pit road. When the race restarted, Gibbs and his teammate Christopher Bell controlled the race with some scarce contenders such as Daniel Suarez and Kyle Larson also running up front. On Lap 194, the No. 16 of A. J. Allmendinger spun out, triggering the first caution for incident of the night.
With just under 70 laps remaining, the fuel window opened up and we saw a variety of strategies on pit road during the caution break. Christopher Bell won this race off pit road, opting to take 2 tires as he looked to advance to the next round of the In-Season Challenge over his teammate Denny Hamlin, who has been an afterthought much of the night. But there was still a long way to go as Sunday night rolled into the dawn of Monday morning.
The race restarted with 200 laps down, 60 to go. It didn’t take any time at all for Ryan Blaney to make a bold move on the outside of Larson in front of Bell to retake the race lead. The Fords were clearly the best in the draft tonight. As the pack approached 50 laps to go, Chase Elliott made a move with Kyle Larson, taking the race lead for the first time tonight. The fans in Hampton, Georgia cheered on for their hometown boy. It didn’t last long, however, as the 9 got stuck in the middle and Blaney again went out to the race lead.
With 29 laps to go, Bubba Wallace, who charged to the lead laps before with the help of his teammate Tyler Reddick, made a late block on a charging Ryan Blaney, putting the No. 12 in the wall. Blaney was not happy after the contact and made his feelings known under caution. The caution in question was flown on Lap 231 at A. J. Allmendinger blew a tire and hit hard into the outside wall. During the break, Bubba Wallace in the lead opted not to pit as did second-place runner Ryan Blaney, who was still fuming over the radio. A bulk of the leaders stayed out. The first to pit was Ross Chastain from 9th. The brought down virtually everyone else after him, trying to find some sort of advantage. SVG won that race off pit road. He would restart in the 12th position.
There were 23 laps remaining when Bubba Wallace led the field to the green flag. His teammate Reddick was behind him pushing. On the inside lined up were Ryan Blaney and Carson Hocevar. Hocevar went for the race lead with Ryan Blaney on the outside. After taking 22 laps to go, Ryan Blaney radioed his crew reporting a massive vibration. Still, he cleared Hocevar for the lead. After taking 19 laps to go, the caution flew yet again when Kyle Larson spun due to a stack up in the outside lane. He was running 8th at the time of caution.
Ryan Blaney led the field to the restart zone with 13 laps to go. With a great shove by Bubba Wallace on the backstretch, Carson Hocevar rocketed out front, clearing Blaney. But it wasn’t over yet as Blaney battled back on the inside. Coming to take 9 to go, Christopher Bell pushed Blaney to the race lead. Blaney cleared Hocevar and the No. 77 slipped down in line behind the leader. Hocevar retook the race lead going three wide as they took 6 laps to go. They wrecked behind them with a number of drivers involved, receiving big damage. Involved in the wreck were Kyle Larson, Chase Briscoe, Austin Hill, Riley Herbst, and Alex Bowman.
This spilt us into NASCAR Overtime! Carson Hocevar led the field through the restart zone to the green flag. Hocevar opted to take the outside line with Tyler Reddick lined up behind him. Leading the inside lane was Ryan Blaney and Bubba Wallace. After a great launch by the inside, Hocevar powered back for the race lead. After taking the white flag, Blaney battled back to take the lead. But it wasn’t done yet. Coming to the white flag and it was three-wide between Ryan Blaney, Carson Hocevar, and Bubba Wallace. At the end of the day, though, Ryan Blaney, who dominated all race long, took the victory over Wallace, Bell, and Hocevar. This marks Ryan Blaney’s 2nd win of the season and the 19th of his career.

Race Report:
- Ryan Blaney started the race from the pole surrounded by his Penske teammates after Ford showed up during Saturday’s qualifying session. From the drop of the green flag, there was a sense of urgency. There was a lot of uncertainty in regard to the weather, which looked questionable for much of the weekend. That meant that it was within reason that the race would not go the distance and that it would be a race to halfway (Lap 130).
- Blaney, from the pole, led the way followed by his teammates. Behind them were a trio of Chevrolets led by Kyle Larson. Early in the initial run, Brad Keselowski had an issue and got into the wall. He fell to the rear of the pack, citing handling as a key issue.
- Inside 20 to go in the initial stage and the Penske stranglehold out front broke up as Tyler Reddick and Kyle Larson both made attempts to take over the race lead. Blaney, without his teammates, was able to fend them off, however, leading every lap thus far. With 7 to go in the stage, Blaney and the leaders ran up on lapped traffic, allowing for Reddick to again make his move. Blaney remained out front. Defending the lead like a drafting master, and taking advantage of a strung-out field, Ryan Blaney was able to score the stage victory, his fourth at the track.
- These drivers earned stage points in Stage 1: Ryan Blaney (10), Tyler Reddick (9), Kyle Larson (8), Joey Logano (7), Austin Cindric (6), Carson Hocevar (5), Austin Dillon (4), Chase Briscoe (3), Chase Elliott (2), and Bubba Wallace (1).
- After a slow pit stop, Blaney lost the lead on pit road. Tyler Reddick takes over the race lead by winning the race off pit road followed by Larson.
- Tyler Reddick led the field to the green to begin Stage 2. The lanes were fairly even for the first couple of laps before Reddick cleared for the race lead. Meanwhile, they were three-wide behind him with Blaney ultimately getting the runner up position. Blaney wound around Reddick for the lead but then Kyle Larson powered by as the outside lane was more organized.
- The intensity was up as Reddick, Larson, and Blaney swapped the lead back and forth. We were 25 laps from reaching halfway when lightning struck and the weather moved in. NASCAR moved promptly, throwing the yellow flag on Lap 108 and the red flag on Lap 110, putting a pause on the racing action in Atlanta. The race was officially under a weather delay just 20 laps shy of the halfway mark.
- It wasn’t until 11:20 PM ET that drivers were called to return to their cars. The hope was to go back green at 11:45 PM. Engines refired at 11:38 PM and the red flag was lifted. The official time of the red flock clocked in at 3 hours, 9 minutes.
- During the caution, the field pitted with Blaney and Logano making it off pit road first. They lined up on the outside with the 23XI duo of Bubba Wallace and Tyler Reddick starting alongside. The race restarted officially just after midnight on the east coast with 37 laps remaining in Stage 2.
- As one would expect, there was a lot of movement up front with a lot of different contenders fighting for precious but little real estate. With 5 remaining in the stage, Blaney and Logano led. Daniel Suarez was in third with his two Spire teammates falling back to just outside the top 10 after drafting to the front. Also in contention up front were Austin Cindric, Bubba Wallace, and Christopher Bell. After taking 3 to go in the stage, Carson Hovecar fell off the pace. It was revealed that he had a flat tire.
- After taking the white flag, Blaney led with Logano behind him. Bubba Wallace and Tyler Reddick were also in the mix for the stage win. Blaney went on to win the stage, completing the sweet. As they were coming to the green and white checkered flag, Bubba Wallace spun from the top 5 after being turned by Ty Gibbs.
- The following drivers earned stage points in Stage 2: Ryan Blaney (10), Tyler Reddick (9), Joey Logano (8), Austin Cindric (7), Daniel Suarez (6), Ty Gibbs (5), Christopher Bell (4), Erik Jones (3), Denny Hamlin (2), and Shane van Gisbergen (1).
- During pit stops, Ty Gibbs led the race off pit road. He and his Gibbs teammate then took control of the race.
