What’s Happening?
NASCAR Cup Series driver and Prime Video analyst Corey LaJoie is calling out NASCAR industry members for comments during NASCAR’s Mexico City weekend.
In the closing moments of the latest episode of his podcast, Stacking Pennies, LaJoie spoke candidly about the weekend in Mexico City and what frustrated him about the first international NASCAR Cup Series points race since 1958.
“What really makes me scratch my head, or grinds my gears, is when competitors within the league criticize or are in that group of people that kind of want to see an experiment or adventure fail,” LaJoie said.
When NASCAR first announced a race in Mexico City, some industry members and fans resisted the concept. Those in these parties cited the race as untraditional or even went as far as to deem traveling to and racing in the area too dangerous.
LaJoie said that these people “lose sight of if the sport succeeds inherently, the team succeeds, inherently, the employees of said teams also succeed.”
For the most part, NASCAR’s efforts to maintain driver safety and sentiment went relatively well during the race weekend. Yet comments from Cup Series driver Carson Hocevar and a social media post from NASCAR Spotter Tab Boyd did find headlines during the weekend.
Hocevar, who called Mexico City a ‘shit hole’ during a live stream, has already been reprimanded by his team, Spire Motorsports. On the other hand, Boyd, who has been removed from his role as a spotter for Ricky Stenhouse Jr.’s No. 47 this weekend, made the controversial post on X Saturday night.
“I’m ready to go home, screw this place, people can talk it up all they want….. can’t even walk out the front door of the hotel without getting hustled and money snatched….in less than 5 minutes. Good area my ass….” — Tab Boyd via X
Though LaJoie did not name Boyd in the podcast, the NASCAR veteran said this during this episode of Stacking Pennies.
“If you find some guy in the street saying that they can swap your dollars out for pesos on the sidewalk, [it’s] probably not the thing to do, and then you probably shouldn’t fire up Twitter and tweet about it.” – Corey LaJoie
These comments are vague, though some fans suspect that they refer to the post by the long-time NASCAR spotter.
In place of Boyd for this weekend at Pocono Raceway, Hyak Motorsports has opted for Clayton Hughes to spot the No. 47, though Boyd is still listed as the spotter for Ryan Ellis and Luke Baldwin for this weekend’s NASCAR Xfinity and Craftsman Truck Series races.
